Over recent months, I’ve had more than normal questions from owners of small businesses about whether they should register for VAT.

Some of the emails I receive are from people who are genuinely worried about the effect that registering for VAT will have on them and their businesses, especially if they can’t pass on the VAT to their customers. People often comment that they’d rather deliberately trade below the VAT registration limit than register and I can certainly understand that is a valid business option. And probably the only real option other than registering.

It got me thinking about whether this means that the VAT registration limit itself is a deterrent to small businesses growing. And quite clearly, it is, because a lot of businesses do chose to remain small for that reason.

But the other way of looking at it is that perhaps once you’ve got through the registration barrier, this frees you up to grow your business and become more profitable in the longer term.

Either way, it’s not a decision to be made lightly. Have a look at my new article where I consider whether the VAT registration limit is a deterrent to small business growth and the issues you need to consider if you are having to decide whether to register for VAT: http://tinyurl.com/84bhgpl

And still more boxes….

And yes, I’m still unpacking. I assumed that moving from a small apartment to a house with double the floor space would mean that unpacking would be quick and painless. But no, everywhere I look there are more cardboard boxes. And I’m convinced that they are reproducing overnight as the pile never seems to go down, however many I open and empty.

But this week is the installation of my new “Infinity” broadband from BT, so by the end of the week I’m hoping to have full telephone and internet connection, so hopefully that will be progress. And I am looking forward to having a more speedy and reliable internet connection. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Otherwise, it’s pretty well back to normal.
