HMRC have recently issued VAT Information Sheet 06/09 here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/news/index.htm on their newspage which gives detail about the new automatic permission rules for opting to tax certain properties. See also my blog here https://vatexchange.co.uk/blog/4 where I discuss the subject in further detail.
The High Court has recently upheld the right of taxpayers to claim compound interest on overpaid VAT. The case concerned “VAT Interest Cars” which is a group made up of over 150 car dealers, who collectively challenged the HMRC practice of paying only simple interest. I believe that HMRC have yet to comment on how they will respond to the ruling or how claims for underpaid compound interest will be met – I’ll post further information on this as it comes out.
Also on the HMRC newspage – VAT Notes No 1 2009 Budget Supplement which summarises the VAT budget changes, including the small rise in teh VAT registration and deregistration limits.
Finally Revenue & Customs Brief 27/09 on the newspage gives details of changes to the Tour Operators Margin Scheme which take effect from 1 January 2010.
